The famous Golden Circle is a must do trip in Iceland. This classic route is a great sightseeing tour that includes the oldest parliament in the world, Þingvellir, located on the rift between the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plate. Þingvellir is associated with the Althingi, the national parliament of Iceland, which was established at the site in 930 AD. Sessions were held at the location until 1798.
The majestic Gullfoss waterfall has inspired both local and international poets and writers and been the hallmark of many an Icelandic postcard for the last 100 years. While Geysir does not erupt anymore, its counterpart Strokkur goes off almost 4-6 times an hour and the area at Geysir is a unique geothermal pearl.
Itinerary
On the Golden Circle we stop for around one hour at each location. We begin by visiting the national park Thingvellir. From there we head to the Geysir geothermal are where we stop for an hour and half for sightseeing and lunch. After lunch we head to Gullfoss, the Golden waterfall, a mere 20-minute drive from Geysir. We enjoy the majestic waterfalls and surrounding area for an hour and then we head home.
Bring warm clothes and good walking shoes. The weather in Iceland can change very suddenly so it is good to be prepared.
